Move over Patron, there’s a new tequila in town, and it’s Avion! (pronounced Ah-vee-own) I went to my first tequila tasting at the company headquarters. I’m not a tequila connoisseur and figured this was an opportunity to learn! Admittedly, I’d never heard of the brand Avion, which was voted Best Tequila, Best Unaged White Spirit and Double Gold by the San Francisco World Spirits Competition two years in a row! That’s a big deal considering next month will mark two years since the company launched! But despite my own lack of awareness, the tequila brand many originally thought was a prop when it was heavily featured on the HBO show Entourage, has generated a lot of buzz.
As I said I’m not a tequila connoisseur so when I tasted it I was expecting it to hit hard! It didn’t, it went down smooth! It didn’t give me what founder, Ken Austin calls the “tequila face”. LOL! I tried three tequila expressions from Avion: Silver, Reposado and my fave, Anejo, with its hints of vanilla, caramel coconut and maple, coupled with notes of mint, rosemary and the fruitiness of peach and cherry. Yummm! And not only is Avion tequila an exquisite product with a price point that offers “affordable luxury”, but the people behind the brand are awesome too!
I love the Avion group! It’s great to engage with people who are actually engaging! The Avion team sincerely believes in its product and brings authentic passion to their work. I was really impressed with how every team member I spoke with possessed detailed knowledge about the product, its aging process and ingredients. Even though the brand came out of the gate very strong, securing national and global distribution in under a year (Patron, for instance took nearly 10 years to obtain this level of distribution), they still work like they’re a start-up. The Avion group means business, but mix it (see what I did there?) with fun, and a genuine interest in getting to know their community.
We all talked about everything from iPhones vs. Smartphones, to how Marfa, Texas has become an unlikely art hub, to Broadway! (I hope Jaimee had a good time at the Tonys where Avion had a hosting room!) There’s no hard sell here, just a group of people who love what they do.
I enjoyed talking with Austin and the president, Jenna Fagnan, who made me feel completely welcome, as did other members of the staff like Sam who set up my tequila tasting, and Ace who guided me through it. I had a great time, and personally I’m more inclined to buy a product when I feel good about the company behind it! It was an honor and pleasure to connect with Avion!
So if you’re looking for a new brand of tequila to try, give Avion a shot! ; ) You won’t be disappointed!
